Christiansen Family

Erik (Denmark), Ingela (Sweden), and their children, Emma, Markus and Amanda, are the newest members of the Hakka team. They are doing a wonderful job as full-time language learners and ministers in the community. That's quite a feat when you're also full-time parents.

Bits And Pieces

How God led to Taiwan

Erik: My wife and I have had Asia on our hearts for some years. We were considering going to Indonesia, because I had been there in the past and I speak the language. But we really felt that God was trying to get our attention and trying to direct us to a different place. We were praying and asking God where to go. My wife had been to Taiwan two times before and was familiar with the work. I was quite hesitant especially because I felt intimidated by the task of learning Chinese. To cut a long story short we went on a spy trip to Taiwan to see the work and we really felt God confirmed our step. We felt peace about coming here so we started to prepare and within two years we were living here in Taiwan.

Ingela: I have had a calling for Asia since I was 13 years old. The first time my heart started beating for the Hakkas was when Eva and Gregg shared about the work at our YWAM base in 1990. That led to a small team in 1991. I was ready to go, but God never opened the door. I didn’t understand, but continued to work with frontier missions and kept the Hakkas close to my heart. Little did I know that He first wanted to see me married and get my life sorted out, at least a little bit. God has in a very clear way led us to the Hakkas, and it is amazing to follow God's plan and timing for our lives.

Favorite worship song

Erik: Dwell In Your House (Hillsong)
Ingela: Great Is Thy Faithfulness

Most difficult adjustment in Taiwan

Erik:The time I have to put into learning Chinese
Ingela: Seeing how difficult it has been for my daughter to adjust, and then, how to deal with it.

Most enjoyable thing in Taiwan

Erik: The fellowship with the Chinese people
Ingela: Spending time with Chinese friends and learning from them. Also - learning how to make Chinese food.

Favorite scripture

Erik: 1 Corinthians 13:4-7
Ingela: Matthew 6:33-34

Gadget that can't live without

Erik: Computer and washing machine
Ingela: My bike, wok, and washing machine

Desired talent

Erik: To be able to play a guitar
Ingela: To sing … I mean really sing, and to be able to play the guitar.

Favorite Chinese food

Erik: Spring rolls, Peking duck, and fried green pepper with beef
Ingela: A lot!! Hot and spicy chicken, and fried beef with green peppers are some of my favorites.

Most craved home country food

Erik: Lakrids (licorice), chocolate, and Danish ryebread
Ingela: Licorice, tzatziki and salami

Nicest ministry memory

Erik: I have to say the times where God, in his great love, has given me divine appointments to be able to speak straight into peoples' hearts.
Ingela: Well, with the limited Chinese we have there has not been a lot of ministry yet, but it has been wonderful to see how God has been working in our friends through our evangelistic outreaches and so on. But there is nothing like connecting with someone and being able to minister God's living Word to another person and see the transformation God brings through His love.

Exercise program

Erik: So far, none … but I hope to be able to play some tennis and badminton in the future
Ingela: Just started doing aerobics with a video. Fun!!

Would recommend the book …

Erik: Living By The Book (Howard G. Hendricks, William D. Hendricks)
Ingela: Unveiled At Last (Bob Sjogren)

Toughest adjustment on furlough

Erik: To be without a house and a home base
Ingela: Haven’t had the experience yet, but I could imagine not having your own place to stay! The true story will come in 2002 when we go on our first furlough.

Nicest thing about furlough

Erik: To be able to fellowship with old friends and to have time to visit family
Ingela: Must be seeing family, spending time with all our friends, and eating all the groovy stuff that we'll gain 5 kilos from!

Appreciates most about ministry team

Erik: The open fellowship we have and the way other team members are always willing to help when there is a need.
Ingela: They are so devoted to God and to reach the Hakkas. I appreciate their openness and willingness of serving with an honest heart. Their concern and way of helping in any given situation is a very precious thing and it has touched our hearts many times.

Previous jobs

Erik: English Teacher in Indonesia and working as a technical electrician
Ingela: I have worked as a nurse's aid and kindergarten teacher.

Favorite leisure-time activity

Erik: Mountain climbing and snorkeling
Ingela: Spending time with friends, enjoying nature, playing games like Settlers

Most proud of …

Erik: My two wonderful children, Emma and Markus
Ingela: Living in the dream that God gave me for my life. Also - I'm proud of my husband for taking up the challenge to learn Chinese!
