Buddhism

The Hakka Chinese employ the teachings and traditions of Buddhism to help them deal with  issues of suffering in this life and escape in the next. This offshoot of Hinduism is not practiced in a very "pure" form among the Hakkas, with the resulting consequence that separating its system of beliefs from those of Taoism and Confucianism is often very difficult.

Though strict Buddhist teaching implies that there are no gods in heaven nor souls in man, their traditions are deity-filled and their path after death presumes a soul. This view of the afterlife includes a season of "wandering" which ultimately ends in their either being reincarnated or landing in the state of Nirvana. (Not to be confused with the state of Nevada.)

It's important to note that though the Hakka Chinese would generally consider themselves to be adherents to the Buddhist faith, their true beliefs and practices are much more Taoist in nature. (See Taoism.)
