The Hakkas

Quiz Question #1: What’s a Haka?
___ A. The sound of an old man clearing his throat.
___ B. An unreached Chinese people group living in Taiwan.
___ C. The pre-game chant of the New Zealand national rugby team.
If you chose B … you’re wrong! “Hakka” with two k’s is the unreached people
group. With only one k, you’re looking at a very intimidating song and dance routine
by the rugby team from New Zealand. (And you thought we made a typo.)
Not to worry! Trick question aside, you’re probably still in the right place. The Hakka
Chinese of Taiwan are truly unreached by the gospel of Jesus Christ. Of the nearly
three million Hakkas who live on this East Asian island, only .2% would consider
themselves to be Christians. (That’s just 20 Christians for every 10,000 Hakkas.)
We want to invite you to come on in and catch a glimpse of who the Hakka Chinese
are and what makes them so unreached. You’ll be able to check out their
history, their
culture, their lifestyle, and their values. All the different hallmarks that make the
Hakkas such a unique people. You’ll also hear first-hand what it’s like to cross such a
radically different culture – including some of those we’d-rather-forget-about-em real
life gaffes and bloopers. And if that’s not enough, we’ll even throw in some tried and true local recipes so you can actually “taste” the Hakka culture in the privacy of your
own home. (Now just where is that old wok you got for Christmas seven years
ago?)
